What is the Best Sleeping Pill?

Sleeping pills are soporific or sedative-hypnotic medications that induce drowsiness and aid with sleeping. These medications are used to treat sleeping disorders, such as chronic insomnia (or even rebound insomnia) and sleep apnea, in addition to short-term conditions such as jetlag and temporary sleeplessness.

Like all other medications, different products help with different sleep problems/sleep disorders.

At Cabinet, you can find almost every kind of over-the-counter, non-prescription sleeping pills and have them delivered to your doorstep.

If you’re looking for a natural sleep aid – one with fewer side-effects and is suitable for long-term use – get our Sleep Aid - Melatonin pills. In case you’re looking for something that takes care of small pains and aches, and aids with good sleep, our Pain Reliever & Nighttime Sleep Aid can take care of both.

If you want a sleeping medication for the occasional insomnia, the Sleep Aid - Diphenhydramine can help. For a complete package that helps with sleeplessness and jet lag, get our Sleep Aid Kit.

Curious and want to learn more about these sleep medications? Let’s dive deeper into their details.

Pain Reliever & Nighttime Sleep Aid

These sleeping pills provide gentle relief against small pains and aches and help you enjoy a deep slumber. Each bottle contains 100 tablets of Acetaminophen 500mg and Diphenhydramine HCl 25mg as the active ingredients.

How does it work? The Acetaminophen in this medicine works as a “pain reliever” by raising your body’s pain threshold. Meanwhile, the Diphenhydramine HCl (an “antihistamine,” mainly used in medicine such as Benadryl to treat allergic reactions and fever) works as the sleeping aid, by blocking the action of histamine, making the person drowsy.

What should I know about it? It’s recommended that you take this medicine right before bedtime for the best results. Furthermore, since the medicine includes Acetaminophen, don’t take it if you’re on any other medication with Acetaminophen in it, as the daily intake must not exceed 4,000mg. If you exceed that daily limit, you might damage your liver. Since the medicine could affect the liver, avoid consuming it with alcohol (and wait till the next day before you start drinking again).

Compares to: The active ingredients in Tylenol® PM

Best for: Those who find it difficult to fall asleep due to minor pains and aches.

Sleep Aid - Diphenhydramine 25mg

This product provides a quick solution against occasional insomnia. The best thing about Diphenhydramine is that unlike other sleeping aids (such as Zolpidem (Ambien), Eszopiclone (Lunesta), and Zaleplon), it’s a non-habit forming solution, making these the perfect sleeping pills for insomnia.

How does it work? The product includes 48 softgels with each containing 25mg of Diphenhydramine. As mentioned above, this compound is an antihistamine. Histamine is a substance that our body naturally creates to promote wakefulness. Diphenhydramine blocks the effects of histamine, inducing drowsiness and promoting a restful sleep.

What should I know about it? Avoid taking this medicine before engaging in an activity that requires alertness (such as driving, operating heavy machinery, etc.). Don’t take the medicine with alcohol.

Compares to: The active ingredients in ZzzQuil®

Best for: Individuals looking for effective, non-habit forming sleeping pills for insomnia.

Sleep Aid Kit

Our Sleep Aid Kit includes everything you need to prepare for jet lag, sleeplessness, or occasional insomnia – perfect for frequent travelers.

What’s inside the kit?

This kit includes the following items:

1. “Sleep Aid” medicine (48 softgels of Diphenhydramine 25mg)

2. “Natural Sleep Aid” medicine (100 softgels of Melatonin 5mg)

3. A sleep mask

Best for: People (especially frequent-travelers) who need a ready-to-go assortment of sleep aid.

Sleep Aid - Melatonin 5mg

This product is a classic over-the-counter sleep aid, with no underlying side-effects. It comes with 100 softgels, each including 5mg of Melatonin – the perfect, non-habit forming solution for jetlag, sleeplessness, and other sleep-related issues.

How does it work? Melatonin is a naturally-occurring substance that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. People with low melatonin naturally find it difficult to fall asleep. The substance induces physiological effects, such as reduced body temperature, that induce drowsiness and promote good sleep.

What should I know about it? Like all other sleep medicine, avoid taking these melatonin pills before or during an activity that requires you to stay alert and awake, such as driving or operating heavy machinery. Furthermore, for maximum effect, it is advised that you don’t use a smartphone or any other device after taking this medicine, as the light emitted from those devices can neutralize the melatonin you take.

Compared to: This is a natural sleep aid with no direct alternatives.

Best for: These sleeping pills are perfect for those who want a natural solution for common, day-to-day problems and disruptions in sleep patterns.

Is Melatonin Safe?

As mentioned earlier, melatonin is a substance that naturally occurs in the human body.

The purpose of this substance is to regulate the sleep-wake cycles (the regular sleeping pattern where we stay awake during the day and sleep at night). The effects of melatonin get neutralized when we’re exposed to light, signaling our body to stay awake.

When we’re in the dark, our bodies increase the product of melatonin, preparing the body for sleep.

Melatonin, when taken in a controlled dosage, is absolutely safe. Some potential side-effects include:

1. Nausea

2. Dizziness

3. Stomach cramps

4. Drowsiness during the day

5. Headache

6. Short-term episodes of depression

7. Dry mouth

Besides the common side-effects (that not all people experience), there aren’t any other major health-risks associated with this substance.

Is Diphenhydramine Safe?

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that is commonly found in many over-the-counter medicines, such as Benadryl®, Tylenol®, and Unisom®, to name a few.

It’s primarily used to treat allergies and fever, but can also be used for occasional sleeplessness.

Diphenhydramine, when taken in safe dosages, is usually safe.

Common side-effects include:

1. Upset stomach

2. Dry mouth, nose, and/or eyes

3. Blurry vision

4. Drowsiness during the day

Diphenhydramine is great for occasional sleeplessness. It shouldn’t be taken for an extended period of time, as it can result in complications related to blood-pressure.

How to Sleep Better at Night

If you want to sleep better at night, you may have to make some changes to your lifestyle, in addition to taking sleeping pills.

Here are some quick tips that could help you enjoy a good night’s sleep:

1. Stick to a Routine – first of all, you need to start by creating a healthy sleeping schedule, and then sticking to it. This will set your internal sleep clock, helping you fall asleep at night and staying awake during the day.

2. Work Out – doing mild to moderate exercise on a regular basis can help your body relax and release stress, helping you sleep at night. However, make sure you don’t exercise right before your bedtime, as it can affect your sleep cycle and keep you up. A good rule is to exercise at least 3 hours before you go to bed.

3. Create a Comfortable Environment – dim out the lights (since it increases the production of melatonin), bring the temperature to a pleasant number, and make your bed comfortable to create a relaxing environment. Throw in a little lavender oil for more relaxation.

4. Limit Your Intake of Caffeine and Nicotine – quit smoking, avoid drinking coffee/tea a few hours before bed, and don’t eat anything that might include caffeine or nicotine in it.
